A cheap and simple test to verify olive oil-related health claims

A cheap and simple test to verify olive oil-related health claims

Commission Regulation (EU) 432/2012 lists a series of requirements for producers to legally advertise the health benefits of polyphenols in their olive oil. Thanks to the OLEUM project, an easy method can now be applied to certify compliance with this regulation.

The fact that olive oil polyphenols contribute to the protection of blood lipids from oxidative stress - a physiological stress in the body that can cause DNA mutations and lead to diseases such as cancer, heart and blood disorders, diabetes and neurodegenerative disorders - is well documented. European regulation tells us that these benefits only become tangible starting with a 20 g olive oil intake every day, and that they can be claimed only for when this daily intake contains at least 5 mg of hydroxytyrosol and its derivatives. But verifying compliance with this requirement is not as easy it could seem. ‘There are sophisticated chromatographic techniques, such as the high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled to ultraviolet-visible or mass spectrometry detector that are used to evaluate the phenolic content of virgin olive oils,’ Giuseppe Di Lecce from the University of Bologna explains. ‘However, these systems require very expensive analytical tools and qualified technicians.’ Together with a group of researchers from the Universities of Bologna and Vigo, Di Lecce devised a simple analytical method to quantify the phenolic content of extra virgin olive oils. The results of their preliminary study, which was funded under the OLEUM project, are promising. ‘The results show that the simple and cheap colorimetric assay based on the use of the Folin-Ciocalteu (FC) reagent can be also efficiently applied to verify the compliance to the polyphenols health claim introduced by the EU Regulation,’ Lecce underlines. The FC method is a well-known colorimetric assay that can be executed in any laboratory, and tests carried out by statistical software and focussing on hydroxytyrosol found its data to be fully comparable with those obtained, after hydrolysis, with the HPLC-UV method using hydroxytyrosol and tyrosol. The next step for the team will consist in analysing a large number of samples to draw final conclusions. Still, these early results raise hope that small labs and producers will soon benefit from rapid and innovative instrumental approaches to evaluate the quality and authenticity of olive oils. OLEUM Is a EUR 5 million worth project funded under Horizon 2020. Its overall objective is to assure the quality and authenticity of olive oils at a global scale. Further breakthroughs, including the setup of a reliable protocol for the determination of phenolic compounds in virgin olive oils according to the EU health claim, are expected before its completion in 2020.

When expire and how to keep fresh the olive oil?

Although we live in a country where olive oil is abundant and we use it in all recipes, it does not mean that you can use the same after 2 years.

If you replace it often, it's fine. Olive oil, moreover, should be used while it is fresh. So, just as you would not drink orange juice after a while, so should you think about olive juice. And because oil is not like the good old wine, see when you should consume it, but also how to store it properly.

When does the olive oil expire?

First of all, if you consume it after its expiration, you will not get anything and most importantly, you will not understand it as it happens with the expired orange juice. However, extra virgin olive oil must be consumed within 12 months after opening. The filtered one lasts up to 3 years, while the one that has not been filtered, reaches 18 months.

How to keep it fresh

Put it in an opaque bottle. Avoid glass and anything that comes in contact with light. The darker the bottle, which protects the olive oil from radiation, the better.

Away from oven and electric eyes. If you are used to storing olive oil next to electrical appliances, change your habit. It may be convenient, but it heats up and expires even faster, as it loses its antioxidant properties.

But not even the olive oil in the fridge. The ideal temperature is from 15 to 22 degrees Celsius. And of course always with its lid.

Πότε λήγει το ελαιόλαδο;

How Extra Virgin Olive Oil Is Good For Your Immune System

Skip the butter and stick margarine in the kitchen and use  extra virgin olive oil to improve your immune system. The consumption of this oil has increased dramatically in recent years with a United States purchase of 292,925 metric tons (MT) in 2011,reports the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS). This high-fat oil contains 73 grams of monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) and is popularly used as for frying and baking as a healthier replacement for vegetable oil. It can also serve as a dressing for salads. Its health benefits derive from its nutritional content of high MUFAs that are considered to be a healthy dietary fat. MUFAs have been linked to lower cholesterol and control the insulin levels in the body as they replace the saturated fats or trans fats that can increase LDL cholesterol levels and the risk of cardiovascular disease.
Extra virgin olive oil is a good source of antioxidants with vitamins E and K that can protect the body from oxygen-free radicals and promote healthy cognitive function, says the USDA. Implementing olive oil in cooking provides numerous health benefits if used correctly. The nutritional value of olive oil is affected by heat, light, and air. For storage, Mayo Clinic recommends to keep the oil in a dark, room-temperature cupboard or in the refrigerator to preserve the healthy fats and the taste that can wither over a long period of time.

Reduced appears olive harvest this year in Crete

Reduced and even the third of the average of the last eight years appears olive harvest this year in Crete , as is clear from the evidence so far , since it has already completed the process by 90 % .
In contrast , the prices of oil, because of reduced production , have increased significantly Arriving and up 2.80 per EURO , and in some cases even higher .
The amounts of oil to be produced this year is expected to touch the 30,000 to 35,000 tonnes for the whole of Crete , as pointed out by scientific advisor of the Association of Cretan Olive Municipalities Nick Michelakis .
" Estimated ", as he said speaking at the " New Crete " , "that we have in Chania around 7000 to 10,000 tonnes in Heraklion 15,000 to 17,000 tonnes in Lassithi and Rethymno from about 5,000 tonnes ."
Meanwhile , extreme weather conditions last year , which caused various phenomena bondage wrist and greatly reduced the quantities produced oil , and ultimately responsible for many other problems that already exist , but there may be .
exports

Prices

At the same time , the law of supply and demand ultimately raises prices of olive oil , which, as formulated today in Crete , is on average around EUR 2,5 namely from 2.45 to 2.60 euros , without excluded and higher prices.
" From the information we have data that are traded in Crete , where paid and values greater that reach 2.80 euros and perhaps more in certain cases , the quantities are large and the quality of the olive oil is very good .
The normative companies in Crete are now forced to pay higher prices for the purchase of oil needed this year, "

The Most (and Least) Fake Extra Virgin Olive Oil Brands

Look what hapen in US,Germany,Australia all aroud the world. It doesn't happen here ih  Crete that products a real extra vigin olive oil 100% fruit juice, the best extra virgin olive oil in the world.
When you look for cheap extra virgin olive oil happen what you will read down.

Frauds! An estimated 69% of all store-bought extra virgin olive oils in the US are probably fake, according to tests by the University of California. UC Davis tested samples from the top-selling extra virgin olive oil brands to find the ones that are not worth buying and those that are.P
In two studies, UC Davis researchers analyzed a total of 186 extra virgin olive oil samples against standards established by the International Olive Council (IOC), as well as methods used in Germany and Australia. They found:P
Of the five top-selling imported "extra virgin" olive oil brands in the United States, 73 percent of the samples failed the IOC sensory standards for extra virgin olive oils analyzed by two IOC-accredited sensory panels. The failure rate ranged from a high of 94 percent to a low of 56 percent depending on the brand and the panel. None of the Australian and California samples failed both sensory panels, while 11 percent of the top-selling premium Italian brand samples failed the two panels. Sensory defects are indicators that these samples are oxidized, of poor quality, and/or adulterated with cheaper refined oils.

You might raise your eyebrows at the conclusion that Australian and California extra virgin olive oils are purer than most Italian olive oils, since the research was partially funded by the California Olive Ranch and the California Olive Oil Council and has ties with the Australian Olive Association. However, we've seen before that olive oil simply bottled in Italy might not be the real thing. You can see the detailed analyses from UC Davis in this PDF.P
Update: We had the wrong information with the brands. These are the ones from the latest report's tables:P
The brands that failed to meet the extra virgin olive oil standards, according to this study: Bertolli, Carapelli, Colavita, Star, Pompeian. Eat Grown Local also reports: Filippo Berio, Mazzola, Mezzetta, Newman's Own, Safeway, and Whole Foods in this list; the data may be from the earlier 2010 study when more brands were evaluated.P
The real deal: California Olive Ranch, Cobram Estate, Lucini. Kirkland Organic, Lucero (Ascolano), McEvoy Ranch Organic are also noted by Eat Grown Local.P
We've shown you a few tips before for how to tell legitimate olive oil from the fake ones, but if you're in a hurry or just want a shortcut, consider reaching for the brands that tested best.
